Life on deck can be rough at times. Therefore, deck clothing had to meet special needs. Over the decades, certain materials and fits have evolved in the naval service. One garment that has evolved is the U.S. Navy CPO shirt. Its roomy construction and two large chest pockets meet the needs of any petty officer on deck. It was originally developed in the 1930s and is still in use today with some minor modifications. For our version, we used the old pattern from 1940.
